The Importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde

Join The Boise Bard Players for our first non-Shakespeare classic! Get ready to embark on a journey filled with laughter, love, and a touch of mischief, in Oscar Wilde’s timeless masterpiece.

You can catch this “Trivial Comedy for Serious People” across the Treasure Valley as we tour Boise, Star, Nampa, and Mountain Home from Aug. 31-Sept. 10.

Plot Summary

In the bustling world of Victorian London, where propriety reigns supreme, two young gentlemen lead double lives to escape the dullness of their daily routines. Meet Jack Worthing, a responsible and respectable man leading an aristocratic life in the city, and Algernon Moncrieff, a charming but mischievous bachelor with a penchant for indulgence.

However, there’s a twist in their otherwise ordinary lives. Both Algernon and Jack have created imaginary alter egos to steer clear of their obligations and commitments. Algernon uses the guise of “Bunburying” to escape to the countryside whenever he pleases, while Jack masquerades as his fictitious younger brother, “Ernest,” in London, allowing him to seek adventure and love in the city.

As fate would have it, both men fall in love with two charming young ladies who are admirably determined to marry a man named “Ernest.” Gwendolen Fairfax, Algernon’s sophisticated cousin, and Cecily Cardew, Jack’s lovely ward, are convinced that they have found their ideal partners.

The stage is set for a hilarious web of mistaken identities, witty banter, and comic misunderstandings as Algernon and Jack navigate the complexities of their dual lives. As the story unfolds, truths are revealed, secrets are exposed, and hearts are tested.
